Warm Ups Part 3
Warm Up #41
3/14
You don’t have to look at all of these portraits, but look at a variety. Choose three bloggers who you feel showcased a variety of emotions well. And tell me why.
Also, some photos were posted as a group, and some were posted individually. Do you think the way the photos were presented added to the overall feeling of the photos?
Trevor Burnes showed a variety of emotions well with the way Max was showing emotion and action. I thought that Brendan Mendoza also portrayed emotion extremely well with the way his model was very vibrant. Elaina Sewells emotions were great too. I feel like the black and white helped bring out the emotion. I loved it when the pictures were grouped together instead of one by one. Trevors was easier to compare the emotions to one another, rather than scrolling through each one.

Check out these two blog posts about taking portraits. Not all of them will apply to what we are doing. Write down ten things you think might be helpful when trying to photograph your subject’s emotions.
Alter perspective. Play with eye contact. Break the rules of composition. Experiment with lighting. Move your model out of their comfort zone. Shoot candidly. Frame subject. Go with a wide angle. Play with backgrounds. Change the format framing.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?
I would be a bird. I've always wanted to be a bird so I could fly. I'd love to see the world. I'd love to soar anywhere I want, whenever I want. A sense of freedom would be mine if I were a bird.

What is this project about?
Scroll through the photos. Which photo/photographer did you enjoy the most? Why?
The project is about famous photographers. The photographer took portraits of these artists and their most famous pictures. I loved the photographer that took a picture of the kid with the shadow in front of his face. I thought that that picture was beautiful.

Choose 5 Social Issue ideas and brainstorm how you might go about taking or creating photos.
My five social issues would be racism, addiction, gun violence, gender equality, abortion. The ways that I would go about taking these photos would be to go to rallies. I would take pictures of the signs. The expressions on their faces would do a great job on saying how they're feeling. I'm interested in taking pictures of these social issues because they are important to me and society.

Whats your favorite thing about living in San Diego?
I've always lived by the beach. Its become my home and my safe place, I feel uncomfortable anywhere else. The very first time I came to San Diego, which was two and a half years ago, I fell in love immediately. The warm ocean and the beach community draws me in completely. Besides Australia, I don't think I could live anywhere else.
Warm Up #35
What did you do over the long weekend?
My week was surprisingly busy. I spent my Friday with my boyfriend and we watched the new Black Panther movie which was amazing! My Saturday was spent with some old friends and I enjoyed seeing them since it had been a while. Since my time is always so consumed with school and my friends, I decided to hang out with my parents and we explored around Encinitas and Carlsbad which was so much fun! Overall this weekend has bene the most relaxing one in a while.

Google Image search "light painting." Find 3 examples you like, and include them in your post. What do you like about them? How do you think they were created? If you right click the photo, or press control while clicking the photo, you have an option to save the image to your desktop. Please delete image from desktop after posting.
These photos were my favorite of all that I saw. I love how vibrant they all are, and how they all focus on highlighting the person. With the first two, I think that they didn't use a flash so that it would look more like a silhouette. The first picture looks like they used a large light wand to create that "curtain" effect. I'm not so sure about the middle one but I know that the last one was definitely used with a sparkler.

Which images do you like (choose 5) and how do you think they were created? (This is a link to a pinterest site, unless you already have a pinterest, you can't actually click on the images. At least I couldn't.)
There were three pictures of these girls dancing that I absolutely loved. The way that they shone the light made it look like their dresses were completely made of light. Another one that I liked showed a woman sitting in a chair but the way that they did the light painting, it made it look like she was sitting on lights. The last one that I liked looked like the man using light painting was using a sparkler and twirled around with it. The light surrounded him as he stood there standing straight. It looked so pretty.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I would definitely travel to Australia. Even though I’ve already lived there, theres no much that I still haven’t seen. I would like to go back there to discover new places and new things. I also would love to visit Paris or Amsterdam. These two places are areas that my dad has explored and told many stories about.

A lot of magazines are trying to use more realistic and natural photos, however many magazines still use extreme Photoshoping for their ads and covers. What do you think of this practice? What do you think it says to consumers?
I think that these ads promote unrealistic standards towards consumers. It is also insulting to the models that are having their bodies reshaped. It's stupid and I think it's dehumanizing. To the consumers, it states that this is what real beauty is and makes people hate their bodies. This is destructive towards individuals.

Describe the photo. This photo has interesting perspective, and no Photoshop was used. How was it created? What elements do you see and where? (When I ask, I want the dominant elements. We often see most of them in most of our photos!)
The photo shows a man sticking his head out of a window. I believe the window is in a moving train, since we can see the movement of the background. The picture is rotated sideways to make it appear as if his head is right side up instead of sideways out the window. You can see different uses of line from the train tracks and the telephone wires. There also different shapes created on the ground and on the side of the train.

What do you do when you are bored?
I usually spend my time watching movies or TV shows on my laptop. My boyfriend always suggests me to watch different things so I'm always watching something. I also tend to work out or spend time with my family. I find that this is mentally healthy. It helps me connect better with my family and also stay healthy.

What are the differences between these triptychs? Which one do you like best and why?
There isn't much difference. They seem to look like the same whole picture split into three different frames. The only different one is the second one, which shows the frames being vertical instead of horizontally. My favorite one has to be the one with the trees. I love the contrast between the white trees and the yellow leaves.

Our next project is going to be a photographic narrative. Google it. What is it, and how would you go about doing one?
Narrative photography is the idea that photographs can be used to tell a story. With this project, my plan is to have a fight scene where I would have two friends act out an aggressive fight. I’m thinking of having them play out the scene and just keep repeatedly taking photos without stopping them throughout the scene. This method seems effective, that way I can pick and choose the ones that I want to use. I am really excited about this because it reminds me of stop picture animation, where you can use drawings or photos in a row, and if you flip through them fast enough, they look like a movie. I really hope to create something like that in the future. But for now I’ll focus more on the story aspect rather than the movie aspect.
